A Present Help in Trouble
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah” (Psalm 46:1-3 ESV).
Even a casual look at the conditions of our world indicates we’re in trouble.
Wars, hatred, divisiveness, pollution, poverty, economics, oppression, and aggression are no longer confined to some areas of our world. These realities are global. Trouble increasingly penetrates our governments, neighborhoods, and homes—no matter where we live.
Technology has shortened the distance between Pennsylvania and Poland, the United States and Ukraine, Rwanda and Russia. Physical distance (prior to recent technological advancements) allowed us to keep the troubles of our world at bay…or at least delayed us from observing the suffering of those in different parts of our world.
Not anymore!
One glance at Facebook, Twitter, or the never-ending cable networks makes it impossible to ignore how our world “groans.” But troubles have always been present in our world. Paul, the apostle, writes:
“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now” (Romans 8:22 ESV).
The Psalmist beautifully describes scenes of a world in turbulence with poetic imagery. Visualize his words: “…though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling…”
Even though his world was chaotic and in turmoil, the Psalmist did not focus on the surrounding chaos. The Psalmist’s firm foundation—and focus—is on Yahweh, a secure, safe refuge that keeps fearful hearts confident though their world is groaning.
In many parts of the world, elections are held for men and women to lead nations and local communities. Candidates make promises with good intentions. But we’ve watched it too many times. Despite their excellent intent, we know that the troubles of our world are beyond the ability of one man or woman to resolve.
Despite the “groaning” of our troubled world, the Psalmist’s words are a timely reminder and encouragement. I’m placing my confidence in God, who is a present help in trouble.
